Their collapse ejected tons of heavy metals, asbestos, and cement, vaporizing highly carcinogenic toxins and creating a massive dust cloud that lingered for months. After the attack, more than 100,000 first responders and rescue workers from across the United States—as well as some 400,000 residents and other workers around Ground Zero—were exposed to a toxic dust cloud that settled as a thick layer of ash. This ghostly cloud remained in the air for more than three months. Asbestos, lead, mercury… all the toxic products and materials present in the Twin Towers were vaporized and remained suspended in the air for months.
